How to buy high-quality plywood

Jun 27, 2023

Plywood, also known as "veneer board" or "laminated board," comes in three-ply, five-ply, and seven-ply variants. Generally, for furniture production, it is preferable to use plywood made from beech, poplar, or willow. When selecting plywood, the following points should be considered:

Difference between the two sides: Plywood has a distinction between the front (smooth) and back (rough) sides. When selecting, the plywood should have clear wood grain, a smooth and polished front surface, and should be free from roughness. It should be uniformly textured, such as cloud patterns, wind patterns, rope patterns, landscape patterns, etc.

Inspection for defects: Plywood should be free from damages, scratches, insect infestations, nail holes, dead knots (areas of dead wood within the board), as well as burrs and grooves.

Absence of delamination: Plywood should not show any signs of delamination, meaning the layers of plywood should be tightly bonded without separation or looseness.

Tight seams: Some plywood is made by bonding together veneer sheets with different patterns. Therefore, when selecting, attention should be given to ensure that the seams are tight and there are no unevenness. In particular, avoid having two different patterns on one plywood sheet as it may hinder proper utilization, lead to wastage, and affect the aesthetic appeal of the furniture.

These are the key points to consider when selecting plywood for furniture production.
